LINE MAN’s Eco-Friendly Initiative: The “No Condiments” Feature

In a bold move towards sustainability, LINE MAN has launched the “No Condiments” feature within its food delivery service. This initiative builds on the success of the earlier “No Plastic Cutleries” option, aiming to reduce environmental impact significantly. Within just two months, the “No Condiments” feature has saved over 20 million condiment packets, with a goal of reducing plastic and food waste by an impressive 4,200 tons annually.

Addressing Environmental Challenges

Mr. Yod Chinsupakul, CEO of LINE MAN Wongnai, emphasizes the urgent need to tackle environmental issues in Thailand, which generates approximately 2.76 million tons of single-use plastic waste each year. LINE MAN is committed to prioritizing Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles by leveraging technology to foster sustainable practices that benefit both users and restaurants.

The “No Condiments” option allows users to specify their preference for unseasoned meals directly with restaurants. This is especially relevant in Thai food culture, where various condiments are often used. By providing this choice, LINE MAN aims not only to reduce plastic waste from condiment packets but also to minimize food waste associated with unused sauces.

Significant Impact on Waste Reduction

The initiative is making a real difference. LINE MAN expects to cut down over 350 tons of plastic and food waste each month. Many users are opting out of condiments for noodle dishes, indicating a positive shift towards more mindful consumption.

To complement this initiative, LINE MAN has partnered with companies like Doozy Online and Dezpax to introduce a biodegradable Green Packaging program. Over 1,300 restaurants nationwide are already participating, proudly displaying the “Eco-Friendly Restaurants” badge on the LINE MAN app. This badge signifies their commitment to sustainability and encourages consumers to support eco-friendly dining options.

Raising Awareness

In collaboration with WWF Thailand, LINE MAN is also working to raise awareness about reducing plastic use in restaurants across southern Thailand, including regions such as Songkhla, Hat Yai, Surat Thani, and Koh Samui. These efforts are designed to promote environmentally friendly practices within the industry and among consumers.

Encouraging Sustainable Habits

Ms. Preeyaporn Suwanaged, Director General of the Pollution Control Department, stresses the importance of managing waste throughout the product lifecycle. She encourages suppliers and consumers alike to adopt eco-friendly practices, noting that features like “No Condiments” are essential for changing consumer behavior and supporting restaurants in using sustainable packaging.

The impact is evident in restaurants like Pad Thai Roi Ha Kung Ten, where owner Ms. Soracha Puangpat reports that around 30% of their LINE MAN orders opt out of condiments and cutlery. Her restaurant has been using eco-friendly packaging for over six years, enhancing the dining experience while contributing to environmental protection.

Conclusion

LINE MAN's “No Condiments” feature is a significant step toward sustainability in the food delivery industry. By promoting eco-friendly practices and addressing waste reduction, LINE MAN sets a positive example for others to follow. This initiative proves that small choices can lead to substantial positive impacts on our environment. If you’re looking to make a difference with your food choices, consider opting for “No Condiments” next time you order!
